Chapter One

“Mitchell,” my friend shouted from outside my garage. It was Josh and from the sound of it, he had good news. And to be honest, I needed a break. I’d been working for four hours straight.

I pushed the button for the garage door. The light from outside was overly bright compared to the darkness I had been working in before. But the light revealed the huge workbench covered in computer and electrical parts. Josh was so excited he couldn’t even wait for the door to fully raise. He practically crawled under it as it slowly slid up toward the ceiling.

“Good news?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

“We got the booth,” he said, his voicing brimming with excitement.

“You do know you could have texted me, or even called, rather than come all the way over here,” I said, unable to stop from smiling. The fact was, this news was big. After spending three years developing the hardware, working out of my garage, we finally had a place to showcase all of our hard work. It wasn’t everyday that two guys working out of a garage with no financial backing brought a product to market. We still had a ways to go before we really made it. But if everything went to plan, we would be able to start taking orders. And that was a huge step in the right direction.

“I just had to see that smile on your face,” Josh said, almost laughing. “But this is great. We finally made it.”

“There’s still a lot of work to do before then,” I said. “Can you handle getting all the graphics and swag ready for our booth? We only have a week.”

“I’ve got everything covered,” Josh said confidently. “You just make sure we have that demonstrator model ready to go. No one will buy if they can’t see how great this thing is.”

“It’s almost done now,” I said as I picked up our latest prototype. Sure, there were already virtual reality headsets available, but Josh and I thought we could do better. And not to toot our own horn, but I thought we had succeeded. Of course, just because we had a better product didn’t mean we would make money. We were still on fragile footing money-wise.

“All right man, you keep working and I’ll get started on putting together everything we’ll need for a kick-ass demo booth. Damn, I’ll need to find us a booth babe too. That’s gonna be tricky.”

I would have said something, but Josh was already walking away. His earlier joy had been replaced by the anxiety of getting everything ready for the electronics fair we had been accepted into. With only a week to go, we didn’t have a lot of time to get ready.

Over the next several days, I didn’t actually see Josh. We were both busy with our respective parts of the project. I was in hardware and Josh worked the software end. Since he had already worked out the connection to existing software architecture, he had turned his focus toward branding.
